Commentary

During Joe Biden's term as U.S. president, Donald Trump (and Fox News) lambasted him mercilessly for each and every gaffe. Yeah, sure, the criticism was justified, as Biden came off as awfully frail, even when he wasn't actively fumbling someone's name or tripping over a sandbag.

Biden's frailness and lack of public appearances were in contrast to the energetic Trump, who seemed every other day to lead a lengthy rally in cities all over the country. Hmm, would Fox News be as hard on Trump if he started showing the same signs of aging that Biden did?

Nahhh.

Anyway, fast forwarding to now, we note that Trump is currently about the same age as Biden was at the same point during his term. In fact, Trump was 78 years 220 days old when he started his second term, which makes him 159 days older than Biden's 78 years 61 days when he started his term. So...Trump is a bit older than a similarly situated Biden, and he is beginning to experience the same types of struggles that Biden faced during his term. As fate would have it, Trump has recently struggled to stay awake during cabinet meetings. (Who's sleepy now lol?)

Among the other gaffes with similarities between Biden and Trump are stumbling on the steps of Air Force One (item 3) and looking lost during public events, such as Trump's October meeting in Tokyo with Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi (item 7). Wow, this may be just the beginning of Trump's struggles, as about three years remain before he completes his second term.

While we thought it would surely be fun to do a gaffe comparison, we found that our first draft was more sad than funny. As a result, we've tried to increase the humor level by pairing the dueling presidential blunders with scenes from notable Looney Tunes episodes starring Bugs Bunny. Several of the Bugs Bunny items include references to scenes that feature opera or classical music.

For example, item 10 refers to "Long-Haired Hare," where Bugs dresses in formal conductor attire and pretends to be a respected conductor named Figaro. Mischievous Bugs signals for the famous opera singer Giovanni Jones to hold a note for so long that he turns different colors and starts writhing on the floor. Eventually, the entire concert hall collapses. Earlier in the episode, Giovanni had lambasted Bugs for interrupting his vocal rehearsal, but Bugs turned things around using his clever conductor disguise.

Bugs conducts an orchestra with his ears (item 5) in "Baton Bunny" wherein he is distracted by a fly during the performance of the overture to Franz von Suppé's Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna.

In "Rabbit of Seville" (item 4), Bugs rubs hair tonic into Elmer Fudd's bald head as classical music plays. In fact, throughout the episode every action is synchronized with the music in the overture of Gioachino Rossini's The Barber of Seville. This synchronization is a classic example of "Mickey Mousing."

Item 8 is a reference to "What's Opera, Doc?" a parody of Richard Wagner's operas. A memorable scene shows Bugs as the beautiful Valkyrie Brünnhilde, thoroughly mesmerizing Elmer Fudd as the demigod Siegfried. The animated short includes music from multiple Wagner operas, with the Brünnhilde scene set to the overture to Tannhäuser. This episode is considered an animation classic.
